Growing guide for Chinese Cabbage Seeds

Planting instructions

Chinese cabbage seeds should be planted 4-6 weeks before the date of the last frost in spring. It is advisable to plant Chinese cabbage directly in the garden itself since these plants don’t transplant well.

Sow the seeds ½ an inch deep in the soil and at least 4 inches apart. When the seeds mature to seedlings, thin them to 15 - 20 inches apart. In case you are planting multiple plants in rows, then, maintain a distance of 18 - 30 inches between each row.

Growing Requirements

Pests & Diseases

Pests: Beet Armyworm, Cabbage Looper, Cutworms, Diamondback Moth, Large Cabbage White, Thrips, Flea Beetles. Diseases: Alternaria Leaf Spot, Black Rot, Clubroot, Downy Mildew, Powdery Mildew, Watery Soft Rot, Bacterial Soft Rot, Blackleg, Cabbage Aphid, Damping-off. Watering the plants in the morning helps to avoid fungal diseases. Companion plants significantly reduce incoming pests on your crops. Watering down the plants with a strong stream of water followed by an application of diluted neem or castor oil on the pest-affected parts of the plant will help to get rid of them.

soil

Well-drained, sandy loam soil that has a high organic nutrient content and a pH level between 5.5 to 7.6.

spot

Full sun in cool regions; partial shade in warm regions.

Temperature

Chinese Cabbage needs a temperature between 18°C to 22°C to germinate.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist at all times to help the plants grow faster. Adequate moisture in the soil will keep the fruit tender.

how to harvest

You can harvest Chinese Cabbage plants within 70-80 days of planting. Cut the cabbage heads at soil level using a sharp knife, when they are compact and firm.

Complete the harvesting process before the onset of the winter months. If you are planning to harvest the cabbage heads and use them for later, first, you’ll need to clean them of browning and remove bug damaged leaves on the outside. Then, wrap them in paper towels and keep them in the refrigerator so that they can stay fresh for at least a few weeks.
