Red romaine lettuce can be discerned from the Green lettuce not just in color but in flavour as well. Red lettuce has a long history to its credit with origin attributed to ancient Romans who were growing red lettuce about 5000 years ago. Red Lettuce is also considered fat free food comprising mainly of water. You can indulge on a bowl full of red lettuce and feel full while getting a heave of nutrition such as vitamins A & K. Red leaf lettuce is easily recognized by its spoon like bunch of leaves with shades of red to dark reddish-purple. It has about the same nutritional value as green leaf lettuce but has double the vitamin A. Red lettuce has a shorter shelf life as compared to other members of lettuce family and should be consumed within a week after harvest.

Planting instructions

Due to the small seed size , a well-tilled seedbed is essential. Large clods will reduce germination

Direct sowing is recommended as soon as the soil can be made. Plant seeds ½ inch deep.

You can sow seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before spring for an early crop. Harden off seedlings for approximately one week, and transplant outside either 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after the winter ends.

Seeds may be sown in single rows with proper spacing. Leaf Lettuce - Plant 6 -8 inches apart.

Your rows of plants should be 12 to 15 inches across. Pass over the seeds with ¼ to ½ inch of soil.

Lettuce should be harvested when it is nice, tender, & fully matured in size just before adulthood.

Before maturity, you can harvest leaf lettuce by simply removing outer leaves so that the centre leaves can grow unhindered. A second harvest is often possible this way. Crisphead lettuce is picked when the core is firm.

Mature lettuce gets bitter and woody and it will go bad quickly, so keep harvesting accordingly.

  • Can it be grown indoors?

    Lettuce is so easy to grow it can be started indoors for early transplants or sown directly in the garden. In fact, doing both is recommended to get maximum production. Start some lettuce seeds indoors in peat pots a few weeks before the last frost date in your area.
