Have a Question?

Cayenne peppers are the slender elongated chili peppers that belong to the nightshade family. This variety of chilli peppers is considered to be moderately ranging from 30000 to 50000 SHU on the Scoville scale. Cayenne peppers have a varied range of cooking applications including stir-frying, boiling, sauteing, or they can be used raw for that extra heat. Cayenne peppers are native to French Guiana and derive their name from the region. The peppers grow up to 10-15 cm in length and 1-4 cm in diameter. The dark green skin of the peppers is glossy and smooth and the flesh on the inside is pale white with white seeds. The heat of the pepper will go on increasing as the pepper turns from green to red.

Growing guide for Pepper Cayenne Seeds

Planting instructions

Sow the seeds at a depth of ¼ inches in loosely packed soil positioned in full sun. Keep the topsoil evenly moist since dry spells can hinder germination. The seedlings will appear within 16 to 22 days in ideal growing conditions. Remember that the plant will not produce any flowers or fruits if the temperature drops below 16-17°C.

Growing Requirements

pests & diseases

Damping off, wilting, powdery mildew, blight and leaf mosaic are common pepper plant diseases which can be managed by removing weeds around the plants and optimum watering. Some common pepper pests include aphids, flea beetles, leaf miners, thrips and spider mites. Use diluted neem spray to control these pests.

soil

Moderately fertile soil with pH ranging from 6.5 to 7 ideal for growing cayenne peppers. It’s important to manage the nitrogen in soil since excessive nitrogen can lead to more foliage growth instead of producing fruits.

spot

Cayenne pepper will grow best in full sunlight and produce better fruits throughout the growing season if positioned in full sun.

temperature

The ideal soil temperature for growing cayenne peppers should range from 20 to 30°C.

watering

Be prudent white watering cayenne peppers. They require soil moisture to grow, however they are also very sensitive to overwatering and wet plant roots can cause the plant to die.

how to harvest

Cayenne peppers will get ready for harvest in 70 to 80 days after sowing. Harvest green peppers for pungent heat or let the peppers turn red on the plant for added heat.. Snip off the required chilli pepper with shears so as not to damage the plant.
