Have a Question?

Edamame or green soybean is a versatile crop that belongs to the Fabaceae family of plants. The young tender bean pods are referred to as edamame while the mature bean is called soybean. When young and fresh, edamame beans have a fuzzy white texture on their skin. A summer-loving bush type bean, the edamame bean plant will grow up to 1.5 to 2 meters. Edamame bean pods are light green in colour and the bean pods are have a pale green hue. Only the beans in edamame pods must be consumed after cooking. It’s best to boil or steam them for 5-6 minutes and then consume the fresh bean pods with flavouring and salt. Gardeners also use edamame as a cover crop for nitrogen fixation of the soil.

Growing guide for Edamame Soybean Seeds

Planting instructions

Sow edamame bean seeds at a depth of 1 to 2 inches at the start of spring once the soil temperatures are above 15-20℃. Edamame bean seeds are not frost tolerant hence they will not germinate in cold soil. The seeds will start germinating in 10 to 15 days in ideal growing conditions. Corn, celery and strawberries are good companion plants for edamame beans. Avoid planting near onion and garlic. Staggered planting after every two weeks will also help maintain a consistent supply of beans during the season.

Growing Requirements

pests & diseases

Although edamame bean plants are usually free of any pests and diseases, some common pests like aphids and beetles can try to affect the foliage. Organic neem oil spray is an ideal and organic solution to get rid of these pests. Moreover, the edamame bean planting site must be rotated after every three years for soil fixation.

soil

Edamame bean plants will grow best in loose well-draining soil with pH ranging from 6.0 to 6.8.

spot

Edamame bean plant must be grown in full sun for better yield.

temperature

The ideal soil temperature for germination will range from 15-20℃ while the daytime temperature range from 18 to 25℃.

watering

Edamame bean plants require consistent watering for pod formation. Ensure the soil doesn’t get soggy from daily watering.

how to harvest

Edamame beans are best harvested when they are half mature on the plant. Once the bean pods are 2-3 inches in length, it is time to harvest them. Mature edamame beans are harvested for soybean. Dried soybean seeds are used to make soy milk and tofu.
