Have a Question?

Botanically known as Spinacia oleracea, Spinach Matador is a fast-growing, heat-tolerant variety which is good for growing in containers and small spaces. Spinach matador is known to have originated in Southeast Asia. The oval and smooth leaves of spinach matador have excellent taste and are slow to bolt. Although spinach matador can be grown any time of the year, spring and autumn are the best times to grow it since it thrives in slightly colder temperatures. Once fully mature, the plant will grow up to a height of 7-8 inches. Spinach matador is composed of high levels of vitamins A, E, iron, magnesium, folate, and potassium and dietary fibres. Spinach matador is one of the most versatile greens that a home-gardener can grow since it can be consumed raw or cooked. The deep green leaves of spinach matador can be added to salads, pasta, and rice-based recipes.

Growing guide for Spinach Matador Seeds

Planting instructions

Spinach grows best in fertile, nitrogen-rich soil. Sow the seeds at a depth of ¼ inches. Spinach matador likes to grow in semi-shades hence it is advisable to plant it between other taller crops like beans and carrots. Overcrowding can lead to stunted growth and to manage this, the seedlings must be thinned to 4-6 inches apart when they have developed their first true leaves. Prepare some shade for spinach matador plants in case the temperature soars above 30 °C. Spinach matador seedlings are difficult to transplant and it is best to sow the seeds directly outside.

Growing Requirements

pests

Since spinach grows in a rather colder environment, pests are not as big of a problem. However, some pests like leafminers and aphids can still cause the spinach leaves to turn brown or cause them to blight. Use an organic spray to deter these pests. In addition to these, downy mildew can occur due to wet weather which can be avoided by letting the leaves dry out.

soil

Spinach matador grows well in nitrogen-rich, well-drained soils with the soil pH ranging between 6.5 to 7.

spot

Spinach matador must be grown in partial shade for best taste and flavours.

temperature

Ideal germination temperature for spinach matador seeds must range between 15-20 ℃(60-68 ℉)

watering

Spinach matador likes cool and moist soil. However, soggy soil may cause the plant to die. Hence proper drainage is essential for the successful growth of spinach matador. Evenly water the soil at root crown level frequently to keep the soil cool.

how to harvest

Spinach matador leaves can be harvested once the plant has 6-8 leaves that are 3-4 inches long. Cutting the outermost leaves first as per the requirement will lengthen the harvest period of the plant. In case you wish to harvest the entire plant, cut just above the soil surface and right below the crown with a sharp knife.

Low germination

Unfortunately I got zero germination on these seeds. & I had bought them immediately after I had gotten an excellent germination on the spinach seeds. I also do not understand what this variety is, since the seeds do not look like spinach seeds & there is no information on this type of spinach when I googled it by the name given.
