AllThatGrows: Soil & Seasons – A Farm Diary

"Soil is not just dirt; it’s the cradle of our food, the foundation of life, linking humanity to the earth in an eternal cycle." – Vandana Shiva

Welcome to Our Farm

Welcome to Our Farm

One of the most satisfying parts of the work here at AllThatGrows is ‘Visiting the Farm’ every now and then. Looking at the carrot tops swaying in the January wind, being amazed with the spectacular display of herbs and flowers in April, watching flowers of melons, gourds and squashes adorn the fields and trellises in July, and patiently waiting for broccoli and cauliflowers to bloom fully for harvest in December. All of this gives tremendous joy to our entire team after dealing day in and day out with shipping partners  to sort out deliveries for the customer.

Our farm is more than a piece of land for us, it is a living classroom, a laboratory, and a place where our ideas and efforts meet results. We are all delighted to immerse ourselves in the cycles of nature, observing how seasons affect soil, plants, and ultimately, our food.

Why Soil Matters to Us

Why Soil Matters to Us

Soil is the heartbeat of our farm. Rich, healthy soil nurtures plants, promotes biodiversity, and sustains life. Everything that we sell, from vegetables to flowers, every seed planted relies on fertile soil to grow strong and healthy. Understanding the soil is the first step to growing food that is not only abundant but also nutritious. And the natural methods of improving soil have always worked for us for many many years now.

The Different Gardens on Our Farm

The Different Gardens on Our Farm

We love testing our seeds and bulbs in multiple types of gardens designed to explore different growing techniques:

  • Raised Bed Garden: Ideal for vegetables and herbs, it improves drainage and soil quality.
  • Container Garden: Perfect for patios and balconies, allowing us to grow in small spaces.
  • Vertical Garden: Efficient for climbing plants and maximising space.
  • Farm Fields: The core of our vegetable and cereal cultivation.
  • Greenhouse: Enables year-round growth, even in cooler months.
  • Lawn Areas: Provides greenery and balance to the farm landscape.
  • Flower Garden: Adds colour, attracts pollinators, and enhances biodiversity.
  • Herb Garden: A dedicated area for culinary and medicinal herbs.

Testing and Harvesting

Testing and Harvesting

Before any new variety reaches our customers, we test it thoroughly. By trying different seeds and techniques each season, we learn what grows best in what growing conditions. We never use any chemicals to rid our crops of unwanted pests and that has resulted in rows of leafy greens being destroyed overnight sometimes. But that is a bargain we do not mind making for a chemical free harvest.

While the harvest is a reward for our entire team, the real goal is to ensure our customers can successfully grow these seeds and bulbs at home.

Lessons from Our Garden

Lessons from Our Garden

Over the years, our time at the farm has taught us valuable lessons through both successes and failures:

  • When it comes to gardening, you simply can not rush the results.
  • Not every plant thrives the first time, the key is to keep trying.
  • Timing of planting is crucial; even the best seeds need the right season.
  • Proper watering and soil care make a big difference.
  • Companion planting can improve yields and reduce pests.
  • Consistency and patience with your soil and seeds are as important as knowledge.

The Importance of Growing Your Own Food

In today’s world where we see adulterated food being captured across the country in various raids, growing your own food is more important than ever. It connects us to nature, reduces dependence on processed food, and gives us control over what we eat.

At AllThatGrows, we hope to inspire you to start your own garden and experience the joy and satisfaction of homegrown produce.

Happy gardening!
