ATGLife Mates: Featuring Divya Kanwar
Previous PostMeet Divya Kanwar, whose gardening journey began quite unexpectedly. What started with a few overwatered plants and zero experience soon turned into a learning curve fuelled by trial, error, and resilience.
How did you start gardening?

I started gardening after my college when I started working. And it was definitely not an intentional step to start my gardening journey. Just a few pots of flowers, and with no knowledge and experience, I ended up with dead over-watered plants. That made me really upset. And that's how my learning process began.
What are some of your favourite plants to grow in the garden?

In small spaces - I like to have ZZ, philodendrons - burl marx, basil, micans, sansevierias. For the bright sunlit but small areas - I like to collect varieties of rare plants of succulents and cacti. If there is no limitation of space - I would like to grow almost every seed I know. But I usually pick the rare varieties, heirloom seeds and wild native seeds. I like to grow flowers like sunflowers, zinnia, and nasturtiums. Growing from seeds is something I am always practicing, either in the box or plate or in the soil.
What are some of the plants that you’ve not had as much success with?

I think I am bad with calatheas.
Are there any new plants on your wishlist?

- Philodendron Micans Aurea Variegated
- Passiflora Trifasciata
- Monstera Peru Variegated
- Laila majnu plant
What would you like to say to our new gardeners?

- Under watering is better than over watering.
- Good fluffy active soil is the key for healthy plants.
- Try to grow from seeds to learn gardening.
Any gardening hack you want to share with us?

I always like to throw random seeds, especially basil, marigold. These are good for pollinators. If you like to grow lemons/tomatoes/chillies in your garden, do sow some basil next to them.
Any particular Instagram accounts you follow for inspiration?
I like to watch the asmr videos on plant related accounts. No specific handle in particular.
