Have a Question?

French Marigolds (Tagetes patula) are compact, bushy plants with lush green, finely divided leaves that beautifully contrast their vivid blooms. The flowers appear in striking shades of yellow, orange, red, and mahogany, often with intricate bi-coloured patterns. These rounded, ruffled blossoms typically measure 4–5 cm in diameter and bring a cheerful touch to any garden. Perfect for edging pathways, brightening up borders, or filling containers and hanging baskets, French Marigolds also make excellent companions for vegetable gardens as they naturally repel pests and attract pollinators.

Growing guide for French Marigold Flower Seeds

Planting instructions

Sowing Depth: Sow seeds about 0.5 cm deep in seed trays or directly into garden beds. Plant to Plant Distance: Maintain a spacing of 20–25 cm between plants to allow for healthy air circulation and full growth. Transplant the seedlings once they are about 5–7 cm tall and have developed a few true leaves.

Growing Requirements

Pests

Generally resistant to most pests, but may occasionally be affected by aphids or spider mites. Overwatering can cause root rot, so ensure proper drainage and avoid waterlogging.

soil

Prefers well-draining, loamy soil rich in organic matter. Lightly fertile soil helps promote more blooms and sturdy growth.

spot

Choose a sunny location as French Marigolds thrive best with at least 5–6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

temperature

Ideal growing temperature ranges between 18°C to 25°C. The plants are not frost-tolerant and should be protected from extreme cold.

watering

Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly before the next watering to prevent fungal issues.

how to harvest

Cut the flowers early in the morning using clean shears when the blooms are fully open. For home arrangements, combine French Marigolds with zinnias, dahlias, or chrysanthemums for vibrant contrast. To keep them fresh longer, remove any leaves below the waterline and change the water daily. Placing the vase in a cool spot away from direct sunlight helps prolong their freshness.
