Have a Question?

Red Mustard (Brassica juncea) is a vibrant leafy vegetable with broad, reddish-purple leaves and a crisp green underside that adds a striking contrast to any kitchen garden. The plant forms lush rosettes of medium-sized leaves with frilled edges and a peppery bite that intensifies as it matures. Its bold, spicy flavour is reminiscent of horseradish, making it a standout addition to salads, stir-fries, pickles, and Indian curries. Originating from Central Asia, red mustard is a cool-season crop loved for both its ornamental beauty and its culinary versatility.

Growing guide for Red Mustard Seeds

Planting instructions

Red mustard can be easily grown in garden beds or wide containers. Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep and keep a spacing of 15–20 cm between plants for ample leaf growth. Thin seedlings after germination for better air circulation and stronger plants.

Growing Requirements

pests & diseases

Common pests include aphids, flea beetles, and caterpillars. Use neem oil spray or mild organic soap solution to deter infestations. Keep the leaves dry to avoid fungal diseases like powdery mildew.

soil

Prefers well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. A slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0) supports optimal growth. Enrich the soil with compost before sowing for best results.

spot

Choose a sunny location that receives at least 5–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In hotter climates, partial shade during midday helps prevent leaf scorch.

temperature

Ideal growing temperature ranges between 10°C and 25°C. Cooler weather enhances the deep red pigmentation of the leaves.

watering

Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Regular, light watering encourages tender leaves and prevents the plant from turning bitter.

how to harvest

Harvest baby leaves in 25–30 days and mature leaves in 40–50 days after sowing. Cut the outer leaves first for continuous growth. Fresh leaves can be used in salads, soups, Indian sarson da saag, or stir-fried with garlic and sesame oil for a quick, nutritious side dish.
