Celosia is a favorite among gardeners seeking ornamentals as they are cheerfully bright. Celosia makes a very showy, unusual display in borders and as edging and are wonderful for bouquets, fresh or dried. It is used in the treatment of bloody stool, hemorrhoid bleeding, uterine bleeding, leucorrhoea and diarrhea. It also works woinders for retinal degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, blurred vision, cataracts and bloodshot eyes.he leaves and the young shoots can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable.

Planting instructions

Celosia is grown from seeds. These seeds are fine and require warm soil to germinate. Start them 4-6 weeks before the last frost in your area.

Seeds can also be sown directly into the garden. Sow seeds when the ground is a bit warm and suitable for sowing.

Sow seeds early in the season and cover lightly with 1/8" of fine soil.

Space small varieties about 18" apart and larger varieties around 18"-24" apart.

Smaller varieties will grow 10"-12" whereas larger types will grow up to 30".

The plant is vulnerable to these pests and diseases: Powdery mildew, Rhizoctonia, Aphids, Spider Mites. Common symptoms to identify include - yellow spots on leaves, sooty mold caused by honeydew secretion, deformed growth, wilting and death, especially of seedlings (damping off) etc.

Celosias will grow best in sandy soil that contains high levels of organic matter, with a Soil pH between 6 and 6.5.

Grow Celosia plants in full sun. They require a minimum of eight hours of sunlight.

temperature

A soil temperature of about 16 °C (60 °F) is ideal for growth.

Keep the soil evenly moist, not too wet. Water the plants during dry periods, on a steady base.

how to harvest

Harvest when the flowers are about 50% open.

The stem needs to be harden off for another 2-3 weeks till the flower matures and get ready.

Flowering starts from below, at the base of the stem.

They can be stored for 2 weeks in the dark (3 weeks in light) at 10 C [50 F]

Refresh with water frequently to avoid bacteria build-up in the soil/ plant area.
