Have a Question?

Borecole Kale is a hardy leafy vegetable that forms a rosette of deeply curled, rich green leaves with sturdy stems and a compact yet vigorous growth habit. The plants typically produce broad, frilled foliage that becomes sweeter after exposure to cooler temperatures, making it a favourite for autumn and winter gardens. Its mildly earthy flavour with a hint of peppery sweetness makes it a versatile ingredient for fresh salads, smoothies, soups, stir-fries, curries, pasta, baked kale chips, and healthy side dishes. Native to the eastern Mediterranean and Asia Minor, Borecole Kale has been cultivated for centuries as a nutritious leafy green valued for its exceptional flavour and resilience.

Growing guide for Borecole Kale Seeds

Planting instructions

Sow seeds from September to February in most parts of India for the best results. In cooler hill regions, sowing can also be done during spring and early summer.

Growing Requirements

pests & diseases

Watch for aphids, cabbage worms, flea beetles and caterpillars. Proper spacing, regular inspection and timely use of organic neem oil sprays help minimise pest attacks. Avoid overwatering to reduce fungal diseases.

soil

Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or well-rotted organic manure. A slightly acidic to neutral soil with good moisture retention promotes lush leafy growth.

spot

Choose a location that receives full sun for the best yields. In warmer regions, light afternoon shade helps prevent heat stress.

temperature

The ideal growing temperature is 10°C–24°C. Cooler weather enhances both leaf texture and flavour.

watering

Keep the soil consistently moist without allowing it to become waterlogged. Water deeply whenever the top layer of soil begins to dry.

how to harvest

Harvest begins in 55–70 days after sowing. Pick the mature outer leaves first while allowing the inner leaves to continue growing. Fresh kale can be enjoyed in salads, smoothies, soups, stir-fries, curries, pasta dishes, casseroles and baked into crispy kale chips.
