Have a Question?

Okra Clemson Seeds produce a classic, open-pollinated okra variety known for its tender, tapered green pods with distinct ridges and a spineless surface. The plants are vigorous and productive, bearing slender pods that are generally around 12–15 cm long when harvested young. Clemson okra has a mild, fresh flavour with a pleasantly crisp texture when picked at the right stage. Its pods work beautifully in Indian curries, bhindi fry, stir-fries, sambhar, stews, soups and pickles, and can also be grilled or roasted. Originally developed in the United States, Clemson okra has become a popular garden variety for its reliable growth, attractive pods and versatility in the kitchen.

Growing guide for Okra Clemson Seed

Planting instructions

Clemson okra can be grown successfully in containers, provided they are at least 30–40 cm deep and have good drainage. Sow the seeds approximately 2–3 cm deep in loose, well-draining soil. Maintain a plant-to-plant distance of around 40–55 cm for healthy growth and good airflow. For containers, grow one plant in a suitably sized pot or grow bag to prevent overcrowding.

Growing Requirements

pests & diseases

Common pests include aphids, whiteflies, jassids, spider mites and fruit and shoot borers. Watch the undersides of leaves regularly and remove heavily affected leaves or plant parts. Good airflow, clean growing conditions and avoiding excessive moisture can help reduce disease problems.

soil

Okra grows best in fertile, well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. A loamy soil with good moisture retention and drainage is ideal for healthy root development. Mixing mature compost or well-rotted organic manure into the soil before sowing can support vigorous growth.

spot

Choose a sunny location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. A warm, open spot helps the plants develop strong growth and productive flowering. Avoid areas where water tends to collect after rainfall or irrigation.

temperature

Okra prefers warm conditions and grows best at temperatures between 24–32°C. Warm soil is particularly important for good seed germination and early plant growth. Protect young plants from prolonged exposure to temperatures below 15°C.

watering

Water deeply whenever the top layer of soil begins to feel dry, while avoiding waterlogging. Young plants need more regular moisture as their root systems establish. During hot weather and pod formation, maintain consistent soil moisture to support tender, healthy pods.

how to harvest

Clemson okra is generally ready to harvest around 55–65 days after sowing, depending on growing conditions. Pick the pods when they are young and tender, ideally around 7–12 cm long, before they become fibrous and tough. Harvest every 1–2 days during peak production to encourage continued pod formation. Use freshly harvested okra in bhindi masala, crispy bhindi fry, sambhar, curries, stir-fries, soups, stews and pickles.
