First discovered in the 1930s, the purple pole beans are a vividly hued variant of the pole bean variety. Revered for their deep purple colour and subtly sweet flavours, the crunchy stringless pods are easy to grow and harvest. The green flesh and translucent white beans of the pod have strong earthy tones and the bean pod can grow up to 6-7 inches in length. Purple pole beans can be used raw or cooked in recipes, although they might start losing their violet hue upon cooking. Purple pole beans are most flavourful when you can snip the bean pods in half easily.

Planting instructions
Pole beans must be planted in a spot with the full sun after the last frost. The soil bed can be prepared before sowing with organic compost and stakes. Sow seeds at a depth of 1 inch. It is advisable to grow pole beans directly garden outside since the fragile roots of the plant do not like to be disturbed once established.

Some common purple pole bean pests are spider mites, aphids, leafhoppers and beetles which can be removed manually or dealt with an organic neem spray. In addition to these, wilting and bacterial diseases are also common in pole beans which can occur due to wet foliage of the plants. Hence it is important to keep watering at the soil level.

For best germination, rich, well-drained soil with the pH ranging between 6 to 7 is ideal for growing purple pole beans. Bean seeds will not germinate in cold soil.

Purple pole beans like warm soil and will benefit from a sunny spot that receives 5-6 hours of direct sunlight every day.
temperature
Ideal germination temperature for green pole bean seeds must range between 21-26 ℃(70-80℉).
watering
Water gently early in the day so that the plant has time to dry off during the day to avoid diseases. Keep the top 1-inch layer of the soil evenly moist with less frequent but deep watering. Try mulching the soil properly to avoid frequent watering.
how to harvest
Once the bean pods are 7-8 inches in length, you can start harvesting the purple pole bean pods. Snip them off the plant with a pair of gardening scissors or a sharp knife without damaging the stem or branches of the plant. Harvesting can also promote more sprouting of new pods in the plant. If you wish to use dried bean seeds, just let the bean pod partially dry on the plant. Then let them dry in a ventilated place until they reach the desired dry state.
