Have a Question?

Celeriac Giant Prague, also known as turnip-rooted celery, is a remarkable variety prized for its large, knobbly, pale cream-coloured root with a subtle hint of green on top. Its crisp, white flesh has a mildly nutty and celery-like flavour that becomes creamy and aromatic when cooked. Native to the Mediterranean region, this heritage variety is a cool-season root vegetable that brings a delightful earthy depth to soups, stews, gratins, and purees. The plant grows with lush green foliage above ground and a substantial swollen root beneath, making it both ornamental and productive in the kitchen garden. Ideal for those who enjoy experimenting with gourmet flavours at home.

Growing guide for Celeriac Giant Prague Seeds

Planting instructions

Celeriac can be grown in deep containers or directly in the ground. Sow seeds about 0.5 cm deep in well-prepared seed trays and transplant when seedlings are 10–15 cm tall. Maintain a spacing of 25–30 cm between plants to allow for full root development.

Growing Requirements

pests & diseases

Watch out for slugs, aphids, and celery leaf miners that may damage young leaves. Good air circulation and consistent watering help prevent fungal issues such as leaf spot and root rot.

soil

Prefers rich, loamy soil with plenty of organic matter. A pH between 6.5 and 7.5 ensures optimal nutrient uptake. Incorporate well-rotted compost before planting for vigorous root growth.

spot

Choose a sunny to partially shaded location that receives at least 6 hours of daylight. Shelter from harsh winds will protect the tender leaves and help roots mature evenly.

temperature

Best grown in cool conditions between 10°C and 20°C. Prolonged exposure to heat above 25°C can affect root formation and flavour.

watering

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Irregular watering can lead to tough roots or splitting, so a mulch layer is beneficial for retaining soil moisture.

how to harvest

Harvest Celeriac Giant Prague about 110–120 days after sowing, once the roots are firm and around 10–15 cm in diameter. Trim off the foliage and store in a cool, dry place. Use it raw in slaws, roasted with herbs, mashed like potatoes, or added to soups and stews for a subtle, aromatic depth.
