Growing guide for Cowpeas Seeds

Planting instructions

Start with a fresh garden bed, nicely weeded with the soil loosened, and ready for sowing.

Plant the seeds straight into the dirt, approximately 1 inch deep and 4-6 inches apart in rows.

Water thoroughly, then wait a few days for the seeds to sprout.

Once the plant grows, it’ll start forming flower buds. From these the cowpeas will sprout.

Cowpeas might bear symptoms of defoliation in early stages with larva’s head thrust inside the pods and the rest of the body hanging out. There can be holes on the buds, flower or pods, due to the presence of slug like caterpillar, honeydew secretion, and black ant movements. The following pests are common in cowpeas -Aphids, Spider mites, Bean beetles, Leafhoppers.

Cowpeas grow well in soils which have up to 85% sand, and are slightly acidic (pH 6.0-7.0).

Grows best in sunlight, but partial shade is also suitable.

The best temperatures for them are 21 to 35 degree celsius (70 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit).

how to harvest

Cowpeas can be harvested at three different stages of maturity: green snaps, green-mature, and dry.

Depending on temperature, fresh-market (green-mature) peas are ready for harvest at 16 to 17 days after bloom (60 to 90 days after planting). Harvest date for green snap pods is normally determined by the central processing unit.

Cowpea pods are packed, 25 pounds net, in bushel hampers or mesh bags.
