Have a Question?

Dandelion is a hardy leafy herb that forms a neat rosette of deeply toothed, bright green leaves with cheerful golden-yellow flowers that later turn into the familiar fluffy white seed heads. Native to Europe and Western Asia, it has naturalised across the world and has long been valued in both traditional cooking and herbal practices. The young leaves have a pleasantly bitter, earthy flavour, while the flowers add a mild sweetness and vibrant colour to dishes. Fresh leaves are excellent in salads, sandwiches, soups, stir-fries and pesto, while the flowers can be used in fritters, syrups, teas and homemade wines. Even the roots are often roasted and brewed as a caffeine-free coffee alternative, making Dandelion one of the most versatile edible plants for the home garden.

Growing guide for Dandelion Seeds

Planting instructions

Dandelion grows well in both containers and garden beds, making it suitable for balconies, terraces and kitchen gardens. Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep and maintain a 20–25 cm plant-to-plant spacing for healthy growth and good air circulation.

Growing Requirements

pests & diseases

The plant is generally easy to grow and rarely faces serious problems. Aphids, slugs and snails may occasionally feed on young leaves. Good drainage, proper spacing and regular inspection help prevent fungal diseases and pest infestations.

soil

Grow Dandelion in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. A slightly acidic to neutral soil with good moisture retention supports vigorous leafy growth.

spot

Choose a location receiving 4–6 hours of direct sunlight each day. In hotter regions, light afternoon shade helps produce tender, less bitter leaves.

temperature

The ideal growing temperature ranges between 10°C and 25°C.

watering

Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water whenever the top layer of soil begins to dry, especially during warm weather.

how to harvest

Young leaves can be harvested in 45–60 days after sowing by picking the outer leaves while allowing the centre to continue growing. Harvest flowers as soon as they fully open and dig up mature roots after several months if required. Fresh leaves are delicious in salads, soups, sandwiches, smoothies and stir-fries, while flowers are perfect for teas, fritters, syrups and homemade wine.
