Eggplant Tsakoniki Seeds grow into an exquisite Greek heirloom variety known for its long, slender fruits and distinctive light purple skin adorned with creamy white stripes. The plant produces glossy, cylindrical aubergines that are tender and mildly sweet, with a slightly nutty flavour when cooked. These eggplants hold their shape beautifully in curries, stir-fries, grills, and baked dishes, making them a versatile ingredient for Mediterranean and Indian cuisines alike. Originating from the Tsakonia region of Greece, this variety is cherished for its superior taste and consistent yield, even in home garden conditions.
Planting instructions
Tsakoniki eggplants can be grown easily in containers or open garden beds. Sow seeds about 0.5–1 cm deep in well-draining soil. Maintain a plant-to-plant distance of 45–60 cm to allow proper airflow and root spread. Transplant healthy seedlings once they reach 10–15 cm tall.
Growing Requirements
pests & diseases
Watch for common pests such as aphids, flea beetles, and whiteflies. Regular neem oil sprays or introducing beneficial insects like ladybirds can help manage infestations. Avoid overwatering to prevent fungal diseases like wilt and root rot.
soil
Use nutrient-rich, well-drained loamy soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Mixing in compost or well-rotted manure before sowing boosts soil fertility and supports healthy growth.
spot
Choose a sunny location with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. Eggplants thrive in full sun, ensuring better flowering and fruiting.
temperature
Ideal growing temperatures range between 22°C and 30°C. Protect the plants from extreme cold, as eggplants are sensitive to frost.
watering
Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Deep watering two to three times a week is best, especially during fruiting stages.
how to harvest
Harvest Tsakoniki eggplants about 75–85 days after transplanting, once the fruits are firm, glossy, and about 20–25 cm long. Use them in dishes such as Greek moussaka, roasted vegetable platters, bharta, or grilled aubergine slices. Freshly harvested fruits have a smooth texture and a rich, savoury taste.
