Its flowers have a clean, bright appearance, with delicate petals that open gradually along the stem, creating a lovely display from the bottom upwards. The long, upright stems and sword-shaped green leaves give the plant a neat, architectural look, making it a wonderful choice for garden borders, flower beds, and large containers. Its pure white flowers bring a fresh, peaceful feel to outdoor spaces and pair beautifully with colourful seasonal flowers. Gladiolus Amsterdam is also an excellent choice for cut-flower arrangements, thanks to its long stems and multiple blooms on each spike. With proper care, these bulbs can add height, elegance, and a touch of classic beauty to your home garden.
Growing guide for Gladiolus Amsterdam Bulbs
Planting instructions
Prepare the soil by loosening it to a depth of about 25–30 cm and mixing in well-rotted compost. Plant the bulbs, also called corms, pointed side up, about 10–15 cm deep in the ground and 10–15 cm apart. For containers, use a pot at least 35–40 cm deep and 30–35 cm wide, with drainage holes.
Growing Requirements
Pests
Gladiolus may be affected by thrips, aphids, slugs and snails. Avoid overwatering and poor drainage to prevent bulb rot and fungal diseases, and remove affected leaves promptly.
soil
Gladiolus grows best in fertile, loose, well-drained sandy loam soil rich in organic matter. A slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH of around 5.5–7.0 is suitable for healthy growth.
spot
Choose a sunny, sheltered spot that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. A flower bed, garden border or spacious sunny patio is ideal, as the tall flower spikes may need support against strong winds.
temperature
A temperature range of around 15–25°C is suitable for healthy growth and flowering. Protect the bulbs from frost and avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat, especially when the plants are young.
watering
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during active growth. Water when the top layer of soil begins to dry, avoiding waterlogging, which can cause the bulbs to rot.
how to harvest
Cut the flower spike when the first one or two flowers at the bottom begin to open, preferably during the cooler hours of the day. Use clean, sharp scissors and place the stems in fresh water immediately to help keep the flowers looking fresh for longer.
