Have a Question?

Gladiolus Bananarama is a striking flowering variety known for its bright yellow blooms and tall, elegant flower spikes. Its banana-yellow to lemon-yellow flowers bring a cheerful touch to garden beds, borders and large containers. The blooms grow in a row along upright stems, with several funnel-shaped flowers opening gradually from the bottom of the spike upwards. The gently ruffled petals give each flower a soft, delicate appearance, while the fresh green, sword-shaped leaves create an attractive backdrop for the yellow blooms. Growing from underground corms, commonly sold as bulbs, Gladiolus Bananarama is an excellent choice for gardeners who enjoy growing flowers for home decoration and fresh-cut arrangements. Its tall stems make it particularly suitable for displaying in vases, adding colour to living spaces and creating beautiful seasonal flower arrangements. Plant the bulbs in a sunny spot with fertile, well-drained soil to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering. With suitable growing conditions and regular care, this variety can add a lovely splash of yellow to your garden.

Growing guide for Gladiolus Bananarama Bulbs

Planting instructions

Prepare the soil by loosening it to a depth of about 25–30 cm and mixing in well-rotted compost. Plant the bulbs, also called corms, pointed side up, about 10–15 cm deep in the ground and 10–15 cm apart. For containers, use a pot at least 35–40 cm deep and 30–35 cm wide, with drainage holes.

Growing Requirements

Pests

Gladiolus may be affected by thrips, aphids, slugs and snails. Avoid overwatering and poor drainage to prevent bulb rot and fungal diseases, and remove affected leaves promptly.

soil

Gladiolus grows best in fertile, loose, well-drained sandy loam soil rich in organic matter. A slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH of around 5.5–7.0 is suitable for healthy growth.

spot

Choose a sunny, sheltered spot that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. A flower bed, garden border or spacious sunny patio is ideal, as the tall flower spikes may need support against strong winds.

temperature

A temperature range of around 15–25°C is suitable for healthy growth and flowering. Protect the bulbs from frost and avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat, especially when the plants are young.

watering

Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during active growth. Water when the top layer of soil begins to dry, avoiding waterlogging, which can cause the bulbs to rot.

how to harvest

Cut the flower spike when the first one or two flowers at the bottom begin to open, preferably during the cooler hours of the day. Use clean, sharp scissors and place the stems in fresh water immediately to help keep the flowers looking fresh for longer.
