Gladiolus Cookie is a striking summer-flowering variety that brings rich colour and elegant height to home gardens, flower beds and borders. It produces tall, upright flower spikes lined with large, funnel-shaped blooms in a beautiful shade of rich blue-purple to violet-purple. The flowers may show subtle variations in blue and violet tones, with slightly ruffled, gently wavy petals that give each bloom a soft, delicate appearance. Unlike double-flowered gladiolus varieties, Gladiolus Cookie is generally described as having large, single-form flowers with six petal-like segments. The blooms open gradually from the bottom of the spike upwards, allowing the plant to display flowers over an extended period. Its long, sword-shaped, medium-green leaves grow upright around the base, creating a neat clump of foliage that complements the colourful flower spikes. Growing approximately 90–120 cm tall under suitable conditions, this variety makes an excellent choice for sunny garden borders, large containers and cut-flower arrangements. Plant the corms in fertile, well-drained soil and a sunny spot to encourage strong stems and healthy flowering. Gladiolus Cookie is a lovely option for gardeners who want to add vertical interest, unusual purple-blue shades and long-lasting colour to their summer garden.
Growing guide for Gladiolus Cookie Bulbs
Planting instructions
Prepare the soil by loosening it to a depth of about 25–30 cm and mixing in well-rotted compost. Plant the bulbs, also called corms, pointed side up, about 10–15 cm deep in the ground and 10–15 cm apart. For containers, use a pot at least 35–40 cm deep and 30–35 cm wide, with drainage holes.
Growing Requirements
Pests
Gladiolus may be affected by thrips, aphids, slugs and snails. Avoid overwatering and poor drainage to prevent bulb rot and fungal diseases, and remove affected leaves promptly.
soil
Gladiolus grows best in fertile, loose, well-drained sandy loam soil rich in organic matter. A slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH of around 5.5–7.0 is suitable for healthy growth.
spot
Choose a sunny, sheltered spot that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. A flower bed, garden border or spacious sunny patio is ideal, as the tall flower spikes may need support against strong winds.
temperature
A temperature range of around 15–25°C is suitable for healthy growth and flowering. Protect the bulbs from frost and avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat, especially when the plants are young.
watering
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during active growth. Water when the top layer of soil begins to dry, avoiding waterlogging, which can cause the bulbs to rot.
how to harvest
Cut the flower spike when the first one or two flowers at the bottom begin to open, preferably during the cooler hours of the day. Use clean, sharp scissors and place the stems in fresh water immediately to help keep the flowers looking fresh for longer.
