Gladiolus Tiramisu is an unusual and eye-catching flowering variety known for its rich, earthy flower colours and tall, elegant flower spikes. Its blooms feature a beautiful copper-red to smoky copper-brown shade, often with creamy white markings or a pale centre, creating a warm, coffee-inspired colour combination. The flowers have gently ruffled petals that give each bloom a soft, layered appearance, while several flowers grow along a single upright stem and open gradually from the bottom upwards. The plant produces long, narrow, sword-shaped green leaves that add structure and contrast to the distinctive flowers. Growing to around 80–120 cm tall, Gladiolus Tiramisu makes a striking addition to flower beds, borders and large containers, particularly when planted in groups. It is also an excellent choice for cut flowers, bringing an unusual combination of brown, copper and cream tones to bouquets and indoor arrangements. Plant these bulbs in a sunny spot with well-drained soil, provide support when the flower spikes grow tall, and enjoy their distinctive blooms during the flowering season.
Growing guide for Gladiolus Tiramisu Bulbs
Planting instructions
Prepare the soil by loosening it to a depth of about 25–30 cm and mixing in well-rotted compost. Plant the bulbs, also called corms, pointed side up, about 10–15 cm deep in the ground and 10–15 cm apart. For containers, use a pot at least 35–40 cm deep and 30–35 cm wide, with drainage holes.
Growing Requirements
Pests
Gladiolus may be affected by thrips, aphids, slugs and snails. Avoid overwatering and poor drainage to prevent bulb rot and fungal diseases, and remove affected leaves promptly.
soil
Gladiolus grows best in fertile, loose, well-drained sandy loam soil rich in organic matter. A slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH of around 5.5–7.0 is suitable for healthy growth.
spot
Choose a sunny, sheltered spot that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. A flower bed, garden border or spacious sunny patio is ideal, as the tall flower spikes may need support against strong winds.
temperature
A temperature range of around 15–25°C is suitable for healthy growth and flowering. Protect the bulbs from frost and avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat, especially when the plants are young.
watering
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during active growth. Water when the top layer of soil begins to dry, avoiding waterlogging, which can cause the bulbs to rot.
how to harvest
Cut the flower spike when the first one or two flowers at the bottom begin to open, preferably during the cooler hours of the day. Use clean, sharp scissors and place the stems in fresh water immediately to help keep the flowers looking fresh for longer.
