Have a Question?

Lovage is a striking perennial herb with tall, hollow stems and large, celery-like, dark green leaves. The plant grows in a graceful, upright form and produces clusters of small yellow-green flowers in summer. Its flavour is a delightful mix of celery and parsley with a hint of anise, making it a wonderful addition to soups, stews, stocks, and salads. Originally native to the Mediterranean region, lovage has been prized in European kitchens and gardens for centuries for its robust taste and aromatic leaves. Every part of the plant, leaves, stems, and even seeds, is edible and packed with flavour.

Growing guide for Lovage Seeds

Planting instructions

Lovage can be grown both in large containers and directly in garden beds. Sow seeds about 1 cm deep and maintain a distance of 30–45 cm between plants. Germination may take 14–21 days. Lovage thrives in the same spot year after year, so choose a permanent location in your garden. Pinch off early flower buds to encourage leafier growth.

Growing Requirements

pests & diseases

Lovage is relatively pest-resistant but can occasionally be affected by aphids, leaf miners, and fungal leaf spots. Good air circulation and proper spacing help prevent most issues.

soil

Plant lovage in rich, well-drained loamy soil enriched with organic compost. The herb prefers slightly alkaline to neutral pH conditions for optimal growth.

spot

Choose a sunny to partially shaded location. Lovage grows best where it receives at least 4–6 hours of sunlight daily.

temperature

Ideal growing temperatures range between 15°C to 25°C. The plant can tolerate light frost once established.

watering

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular watering during dry spells ensures tender, aromatic leaves.

how to harvest

Lovage can be harvested 90–120 days after sowing. Snip young leaves as needed, starting from the outer stems. The leaves can be used fresh in soups, stews, and broths, while the stems make a great seasoning base. Lovage seeds can also be dried and used as a spice or in baking.
