Radish Giant Butter Seeds, also known as Radish Vitessa, produce large, crisp, and mildly sweet roots with a buttery smooth texture. These radishes are round to slightly oval in shape, showcasing a pale rose-pink skin and snow-white interior that remains tender even at a bigger size. Originally bred in Europe, this variety is loved for its refined flavour and versatility in the kitchen, perfect for salads, pickles, sandwiches, or light stir-fries. The plants grow quickly, forming lush green tops, making them a rewarding choice for home gardeners who love fresh, gourmet-quality produce.
Planting instructions
Giant Butter Radishes can be easily grown in containers or garden beds. Sow the seeds about 1–1.5 cm deep in loose soil. Maintain a spacing of 5–7 cm between plants and 15 cm between rows for proper root development.
Growing Requirements
pests & diseases
Common pests include aphids and flea beetles, which can be controlled by neem spray. Fungal issues like root rot or leaf spots can be avoided by ensuring good air circulation and proper drainage.
soil
Loose, well-drained loamy soil enriched with organic compost is ideal. Avoid heavy clay soils that may restrict root expansion.
spot
Choose a sunny spot that receives at least 5–6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and flavour.
temperature
Radish Giant Butter thrives best in cool weather, ideally between 10°C and 25°C. High temperatures may cause bolting and a sharp taste.
watering
Keep the soil evenly moist throughout the growing period. Water lightly every alternate day, avoiding waterlogging to prevent root rot.
how to harvest
Harvest radishes about 40–50 days after sowing, when roots are fully formed but still tender. Gently pull them from the soil, wash, and trim. Enjoy them fresh in salads, grated into sandwiches, or lightly sautéed for a buttery, nutty flavour.
