Sparaxis Mixed Flower Bulbs bring a burst of cheerful colour to gardens with their star-shaped blooms marked by striking central eyes in shades of red, orange, yellow, purple, and white. These vibrant flowers sit above narrow, sword-like green leaves, forming an eye-catching display in beds, borders, or containers. Each flower grows around 5 cm wide, making them perfect for cutting and using in bright seasonal arrangements. With their compact size and radiant colours, Sparaxis are ideal for cottage gardens, mixed displays, or adding splashes of colour to rock gardens. Easy to grow and rewarding, they’re a delight for both home gardeners and cut-flower enthusiasts.
Planting instructions
Plant bulbs 5–8 cm deep in well-drained soil with their pointed ends facing upward. Keep 8–10 cm between bulbs for best results.
Growing Requirements
Pests
Relatively hardy, though susceptible to snails, slugs, or bulb rot if overwatered.
soil
Prefers sandy, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter for healthy growth.
spot
Choose a sunny, sheltered spot to encourage vibrant flower colours and long-lasting blooms.
temperature
Thrives best in mild climates with temperatures around 15–22°C. Protect bulbs from heavy frost.
watering
Water moderately during active growth, keeping soil slightly moist. Reduce watering once the flowers fade and foliage begins to die back. Change water every 2 days if used as cut flowers in a vase to keep them fresh.
how to harvest
Cut flowers when half-open for longer vase life. Place stems immediately in fresh water and re-trim every couple of days. Pair with softer blooms like freesias or daisies for striking seasonal bouquets. To keep fresh longer, change the water regularly and keep arrangements out of direct sunlight.
