Have a Question?

Tulip Black Jack flowers are stunning and unique. They have a classic tulip shape with a single, elegant cup-shaped bloom. The petals are deep, velvety purple, almost black, which is what gives them their intriguing name, "Black Jack." These tulips are quite large, measuring about 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) in diameter when fully open. They stand atop sturdy, green stems that can reach a height of about 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm). The contrast between the dark petals and the vibrant green leaves is truly eye-catching.

Growing guide for Tulip Black Jack Bulbs

Planting instructions

If you’re planting tulip bulbs directly in the ground in the fall, dig a hole that's about 3 times the height of the bulb. Place the bulb with the pointy end up, about 6 inches (15 cm) deep. Space bulbs about 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) apart. When planting in containers, use a container at least 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) deep. Plant bulbs at the same depth as in the ground, about 6 inches (15 cm) deep. Choose a container with good drainage. It could be a pot or a planter, as long as it has holes at the bottom to let excess water escape.

Growing Requirements

Pests

Common pests include aphids and deer. Use insecticidal soap for aphids and consider using fencing to keep deer away. Tulips can be susceptible to diseases like tulip fire and grey mould. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overcrowding. Remove any infected plants promptly.

soil

Tulips prefer well-drained soil. Ensure the soil is loose and not too compact. You can mix in some compost for better drainage.

spot

Choose a spot with full sun to partial shade. Tulips need at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Plant them where they'll receive morning sun and some afternoon shade in warmer regions.

temperature

Tulips thrive in cool to cold climates. They require a period of winter chill to bloom properly. Ideal temperatures for planting are around 50-60°F (10-15°C).

watering

Water your tulip bulbs after planting to settle the soil and provide moisture. After that, they typically don't need much water during the winter. Once they start growing in the spring, make sure to keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.

how to harvest

Tulips usually bloom in spring. To harvest blooms for bouquets, wait until the flower is fully open. Use sharp scissors or garden shears to cut the stem just above the leaves. Place cut stems immediately in a vase with clean water. Change the water every 2-3 days to prolong the life of your tulip bouquet.

Healthy Bulbs…Now Just Waiting.

The Bulbs I received are healthy and the packaging was well done. I have just planted them (sadly did not take a picture before doing so) and now we just need to sit and wait if it was money well spent for 5 bulbs.

You can always use the boxes they come in as a temporary plant starting “pot” instead of using anything plastic which does help me currently.

I do appreciate the seed sample packs they send, though I have gotten Coriander and/or Pak Choy each time, wish it was different each time we order hahaha.

I will try to update as soon as they bloom.
