Tulip ‘Salmon Van Eijk’ is a beautiful Darwin Hybrid tulip known for its tall, sturdy stems and large, elegant goblet-shaped flowers. The blooms open in a soft salmon-pink shade with gentle apricot tones, creating a warm and sophisticated display in the spring garden. Growing to around 50 cm tall, the plants have upright stems surrounded by broad, green, lance-shaped leaves that provide a fresh backdrop to the flowers. The strong stems also make this variety particularly useful for cut-flower arrangements, where the large blooms add colour and structure to a vase. It works beautifully in flower beds, borders, cottage gardens and containers, and its pastel flowers combine well with white, pink, purple and soft yellow spring flowers. ‘Salmon Van Eijk’ flowers from mid to late spring and, as a Darwin Hybrid, is valued for its reliable flowering and strong garden performance.
Planting instructions
Use a container at least 30 cm wide and 30–35 cm deep, with several drainage holes. Fill it with a loose, well-draining potting mix. Plant the bulbs around 15 cm deep, leaving roughly 8–10 cm between bulbs. You can plant several bulbs together for a fuller display, but avoid overcrowding. Keep the container outdoors in a bright, cool location during the growing period.
Growing Requirements
Pests
Tulips can occasionally be affected by aphids, slugs, stem and bulb eelworms and other bulb-feeding pests. Squirrels and other animals may also disturb or eat newly planted bulbs. Check the leaves and stems regularly and remove pests early. Good air circulation and avoiding excessive moisture around the bulbs are important for preventing disease. Common diseases include Tulip Fire, grey mould, bulb rot and tulip viruses. The best prevention is to start with healthy, firm bulbs and plant them in well-drained soil. Avoid watering excessively and remove diseased leaves or plants promptly. Never leave rotting bulbs in the soil.
soil
Salmon Van Eijk grows best in fertile, loose and well-drained soil. The soil should hold enough moisture for healthy growth but should never remain soggy. A mixture of garden soil, compost and coarse material such as river sand or perlite works well in containers. Avoid heavy, compacted soil because standing water around the bulbs can lead to bulb rot. Tulips can tolerate a range of soil pH levels as long as drainage is good.
spot
Choose a bright spot receiving full sun, preferably around 6 hours or more of sunlight each day. A location with morning and afternoon sunlight is ideal. The spot should also be protected from strong winds because the tall stems can be damaged when exposed to constant wind. Good air movement around the plants helps keep the foliage healthy. Salmon Van Eijk works particularly well in flower borders, raised beds, patio containers and dedicated cut-flower gardens.
temperature
Tulip bulbs need a cool growing period before they flower. They perform best when planted during the cooler months and exposed to cool soil temperatures through autumn and winter. Keep planted bulbs away from hot, enclosed spaces and protect them from prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
watering
Water the bulbs after planting to settle the soil around them, but do not keep the soil constantly wet. After that, water whenever the upper layer of soil begins to dry. During the active growing period, the plants need more consistent moisture, especially when grown in containers. Always check the soil before watering rather than following a fixed schedule. Containers dry out faster than garden beds, so they may need more frequent watering. Water at the base of the plant and avoid repeatedly soaking the leaves and flowers. Once flowering is over and the foliage begins to yellow naturally, gradually reduce watering.
how to harvest
Salmon Van Eijk is an excellent choice for a home cut-flower garden because of its large flowers and sturdy stems. For the longest vase life, harvest the flowers when the buds have developed their colour but are still mostly closed. Cut the stems in the early morning when the plants are well hydrated. Use a clean, sharp pair of scissors or secateurs and cut the stems as low as practical. Remove the lower leaves that would sit below the waterline and place the stems immediately in clean, cool water. Change the water regularly and keep the vase away from direct sunlight and heat.
