Turnip Golden Ball Seeds yield beautiful, round roots with a glowing golden-yellow skin and firm, sweet flesh. The plants produce medium-sized turnips with smooth tops and tender texture, perfect for roasting, stewing, or adding to soups and salads. With a mildly nutty and buttery flavour, these golden turnips bring both colour and taste to your plate. Originally cultivated in Europe, the Golden Ball variety has long been prized for its reliable growth and rich, sweet flavour that holds well even after cooking. Ideal for home gardeners, this variety thrives in both kitchen gardens and containers.
Planting instructions
Turnip Golden Ball can be grown directly in the garden bed or in deep containers. Sow the seeds about 1–1.5 cm deep, maintaining a 10–15 cm distance between plants for proper root growth. Thin seedlings once they develop two true leaves to allow ample space for bulb expansion.
Growing Requirements
pests & diseases
Common pests include aphids, flea beetles, and root maggots. Protect young plants with fine mesh netting and encourage beneficial insects. Diseases such as downy mildew and clubroot can be prevented by practising crop rotation and ensuring well-drained soil.
soil
Golden Ball turnips prefer loose, fertile, and well-drained soil enriched with organic compost. A slightly acidic to neutral pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is ideal for healthy root growth and uniform bulb formation.
spot
Choose a sunny spot that receives at least 5–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Partial shade is also suitable, especially in warmer regions.
temperature
The ideal growing temperature range is 10–25°C. Turnips thrive in cool weather and may develop a woody texture if grown in extreme heat.
watering
Maintain consistent moisture in the soil throughout the growing period. Water the plants 2–3 times a week depending on local conditions, ensuring the soil remains evenly moist but not waterlogged.
how to harvest
Turnips are ready for harvest in about 45–60 days after sowing, once the roots reach 5–7 cm in diameter. Gently pull them from the soil, brush off excess dirt, and enjoy them fresh or cooked. Golden Ball turnips can be roasted, mashed, or added to soups and stews for a rich, buttery flavour.
