Watermelon Klondike Blue Ribbon is a classic American heirloom variety cherished for its exceptional sweetness and crisp, juicy flesh. The fruit is oblong in shape with a light green rind marked by dark green stripes, weighing around 10–14 kg when fully grown. Its flesh glows a deep red, offering a refreshing burst of sugary flavour with every bite. Perfect for summer salads, fruit bowls, juices, and desserts, this variety is loved for its balanced sweetness and firm texture. Originally bred in the United States for its superior flavour and reliability, it thrives equally well in Indian home gardens with plenty of sunshine.
Planting instructions
Watermelon Klondike Blue Ribbon can be grown both in large containers (at least 20–25 litres) and directly in the ground. Sow the seeds 2–3 cm deep and maintain a plant-to-plant distance of 90–120 cm to allow adequate vine spread. For uniform fruit size and sweetness, hand-pollinate flowers early in the morning when pollen is fresh. Mulching around the plant base helps retain moisture and keeps the fruit clean.
Growing Requirements
watering
Water deeply but infrequently, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering as fruits near maturity to enhance sweetness and prevent cracking.
pests
Common pests include aphids, fruit flies, and leaf miners. Fungal diseases like powdery mildew and anthracnose may occur in humid conditions. Neem oil spray and proper air circulation can help keep these under control.
soil
Well-draining sandy loam soil rich in organic matter is ideal. Ensure the soil is slightly acidic to neutral, with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0 for the best growth and fruit quality.
spot
Choose a sunny location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Avoid shady areas, as watermelons require warmth and light for sweet, full-sized fruits.
temperature
The ideal temperature range for growing Klondike Blue Ribbon watermelons is between 21°C and 35°C. Growth slows significantly below 18°C.
how to harvest
Harvest the fruits about 85–95 days after sowing when the tendrils near the stem turn brown and the underside of the fruit turns creamy yellow. Slice the sweet, red flesh for summer drinks, fruit platters, smoothies, or chilled desserts.
