7 Beginner-Friendly Seeds to Start Indoors This Spring
Previous PostAfter the long spell of cold and foggy days and nights in large parts of India, February brings with it the promise of the most important thing for gardeners - Sunshine.
The warm light of the sun is essential for little seeds to sprout and get on with growing. Spring is one of the most exciting times for home gardeners in India. The weather starts to warm up, the days get brighter, and it’s the perfect moment to grow something fresh at home. If you’ve been waiting for the new year to start a healthy habit, starting a garden in February might be it!
Starting seeds indoors or on a sunny balcony in early spring gives your plants a strong, healthy start. Even if you have limited space or are new to gardening, these seeds are easy to grow and very rewarding.
Why Early Spring Is the Perfect Time to Start Seeds Indoors

Early spring in India offers the ideal balance of warmth and light for seed germination. The temperatures are mild, which helps seeds sprout evenly without heat or cold stress. Starting seeds indoors also protects young plants from harsh sunlight, sudden weather changes, and pests.
For your homes with balconies, windowsills, or small outdoor spaces, indoor seed starting means you can grow your own vegetables before the summer heat kicks in.
Beginner-Friendly Tips for Starting Seeds Indoors

If this is your first time gardening, let us give you a few handy tips to improve your chances of success.
- Start with clean pots or seed trays that have drainage holes.
- Use a light and well-draining potting mix instead of heavy garden soil.
- Water gently and keep the soil moist, not wet.
- Place your seedlings where they get enough light, like a sunny balcony or near a bright window.
- Once your seedlings grow a few strong leaves, you can slowly move them into bigger pots or outdoor grow spaces.
But remember, with gardening comes the chance of failures because there is nothing called foolproof in nature. Be kind to yourself and your efforts and keep trying. You will learn much more along the way than anything we can tell you.
7 Early Spring Seeds You Can Easily Start Indoors
1. Lettuce

Lettuce loves cool weather, which makes early spring ideal for growing it because the days are neither too cold nor too hot. It grows quickly and is perfect for small pots. Sow lettuce seeds very shallowly and lightly cover them with soil. Lettuce prefers bright indirect light or soft morning sunlight for 4–5 hours.
2. Spinach

Spinach grows best before the heat sets in, making early spring the right time. This might be the last harvest of spinach you will take before summer. Sow spinach seeds about 1–1.5 cm deep in moist soil. It grows well with partial sunlight and needs around 4–6 hours of gentle light daily.
3. Capsicum

Capsicum takes time to grow and mature for harvesting, so starting early in the spring really helps. Sow capsicum seeds about 0.5–1 cm deep. Keep them in bright indirect light until they sprout, and then move them into direct sunlight for healthy growth.
4. Chilli

Indian food is incomplete without chilli. So, having a few chilli plants growing at home is best for adding the much needed zing in your food. Chilli plants love warmth and sunlight. Early spring gives them enough time to grow strong before summer. Sow chilli seeds around 0.5 cm deep and keep the soil slightly warm. Chilli seedlings need 6–8 hours of direct sunlight once established.
5. Okra

Ah, the vegetable loved all across India - Okra or Bhindi. Okra grows fast and does very well in warm conditions. Soak the okra seeds overnight before sowing to improve germination. Plant them about 2–3 cm deep and place the pot where it gets full sun for at least 6–8 hours daily.
6. Brinjal

Who doesn’t love some Baigan Bharta or Baigan Bhaja with their meal after winter ends. Brinjal needs a longer growing season, so early indoor sowing works best. Sow brinjal seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in well-draining soil. Start them in bright indirect light and move them to direct sunlight once the plant is stronger.
7. Tomato

We would put money on it every time: nothing beats the flavor of tomatoes you grow yourself compared to store-bought. Tomatoes are a favourite for home gardeners and grow beautifully when started indoors. Sow your favourite tomato seeds about 0.5 cm deep and keep them warm. Tomato seedlings need bright light at first and later thrive in 6–8 hours of direct sunlight.
At the cost of sounding repetitive, you actually don’t need a big garden to grow your own food. Just a little sunlight, good soil, and patience. Starting seeds indoors in early spring helps you grow stronger plants and builds confidence as a gardener. Start small, enjoy the process, and let your garden grow with you.
Happy gardening to you!
