Beet Chioggia, also known as the candy-striped beet, is a striking Italian heirloom variety first cultivated in the 19th century. Its round roots feature beautiful pink and white concentric rings inside, with smooth, bright red skin on the outside. The flavour is mild, earthy, and subtly sweet, making it a delightful addition to both cooked and raw dishes. Its tender texture makes it perfect for roasting, pickling, or grating fresh into salads. Chioggia beet plants are easy to grow and thrive well in both garden beds and containers, bringing a pop of colour and taste to your homegrown harvests.
Planting instructions
Beet Chioggia can be grown directly in the ground or in containers at least 20–25 cm deep. Sow seeds about 1.5 cm deep and maintain a plant-to-plant distance of 10–15 cm for proper root growth.
Growing Requirements
pests & diseases
Keep an eye out for aphids, leaf miners, and flea beetles. Rotate crops annually and use neem oil spray to control common beet pests naturally.
soil
Loamy, well-draining soil enriched with organic compost works best for Chioggia beets. Avoid heavy clay soil to prevent deformed roots.
spot
Choose a sunny spot that receives at least 5–6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal root and leaf development.
temperature
Ideal growing temperatures range between 15°C to 25°C, ensuring steady growth and vibrant colour in roots.
watering
Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Regular, moderate watering helps prevent cracking and keeps the roots tender and sweet.
how to harvest
Harvest beets in about 55–65 days when roots are 5–7 cm in diameter. Twist off the tops gently to avoid bleeding. Slice thin for salads, roast with herbs, or pickle for a tangy treat. Even the leaves can be sautéed or added to soups and smoothies.
