Cucumber White Wonder is a charming heirloom variety that stands out for its creamy white skin and crisp, juicy flesh. The cucumbers are smooth, cylindrical, and typically grow to about 15–20 cm in length. Their mild, slightly sweet flavour makes them perfect for fresh salads, sandwiches, and pickling. Originally developed in the United States in the late 1800s, this rare variety thrives in Indian growing conditions too. A refreshing summer staple, White Wonder cucumbers are not only delicious but also a visual delight in any kitchen garden.
Planting instructions
Cucumber White Wonder can be grown both in garden beds and in containers of at least 30 cm depth. Sow the seeds 1.5–2 cm deep in well-drained soil, keeping a spacing of 40–50 cm between plants and about 1 metre between rows.
Growing Requirements
pests & diseases
Watch out for common cucumber pests like aphids, whiteflies, and cucumber beetles. Powdery mildew and downy mildew may also occur in humid conditions. Regular pruning and neem oil sprays help keep these in check.
soil
Prefers loose, well-drained, and nutrient-rich soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Adding compost or organic matter before sowing ensures strong, healthy growth.
spot
Choose a sunny spot that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Avoid overcrowded areas to ensure good air circulation.
temperature
Ideal growing temperatures range between 20°C and 32°C. Avoid planting during extreme heat or cold spells as it can affect fruiting.
watering
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply two to three times a week, especially during flowering and fruiting stages. Mulching helps retain soil moisture.
how to harvest
White Wonder cucumbers are ready to harvest about 50–60 days after sowing. Pick the fruits when they are around 15–20 cm long and firm to the touch. Their crisp texture and mild flavour make them perfect for salads, sandwiches, raita, and pickles. Harvest regularly to encourage more fruit production.
