Swiss Chard Barese is a compact Italian heirloom variety with tender, smooth green leaves and short, crisp white stems. The plant produces lush, glossy foliage that’s both ornamental and edible, making it a beautiful addition to kitchen gardens and containers. Its mild, slightly earthy flavour with a hint of sweetness makes it perfect for sautés, soups, and stir-fries. The young leaves can be used raw in salads, while the mature greens are excellent for steaming or braising. Originating from Southern Italy, this variety is known for its fast growth and ability to thrive even in limited spaces.
Planting instructions
Swiss Chard Barese can be easily grown in containers or garden beds. Sow seeds about 1–1.5 cm deep and keep 20–25 cm spacing between plants to allow proper growth. Thin seedlings once they reach 5 cm in height to prevent overcrowding.
Growing Requirements
pests & diseases
Generally resistant to most common pests, though aphids, leaf miners, and snails may occasionally appear. Avoid waterlogging and ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases like downy mildew.
soil
Prefers loose, well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter. A neutral to slightly alkaline pH ensures optimal leaf growth and colour.
spot
Select a sunny or partially shaded location. The plant performs well with at least 4–6 hours of sunlight daily but tolerates shade during hotter months.
temperature
Ideal growing temperature ranges between 15°C to 25°C. The plant tolerates mild cold but struggles in extreme summer heat.
watering
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Regular watering ensures crisp stems and tender leaves, especially during dry spells.
how to harvest
Harvest young leaves after 30–35 days for salads or wait around 50–60 days for mature leaves. Cut outer leaves first, allowing the centre to continue producing new growth. Swiss Chard Barese can be used in soups, stews, pastas, and omelettes for a mild spinach-like taste.
