Hyacinth Aqua is a beautiful spring-flowering bulb that brings a soft, fresh touch of light blue colour and a wonderful fragrance to the garden. The plant produces upright, glossy green, strap-shaped leaves from which a sturdy flower stem emerges, carrying a dense cluster of small, waxy, bell-shaped flowers. The blooms are arranged closely along the stem, creating a full, column-like flower spike with a graceful appearance. Hyacinths are known for their strong, sweet fragrance, making them particularly lovely when planted near windows, doorways, balconies or garden paths where their scent can be enjoyed easily. Aqua is well suited to containers, borders, patio gardens and small urban gardens, and its compact form makes it an attractive choice even where space is limited. The bulbs are planted while dormant and produce their main display in spring when given a cool growing period and well-drained soil.
Growing guide for Hyacinth Aqua Bulbs
Planting instructions
Choose a container at least 20–25 cm wide and 20 cm deep for a small group of bulbs, with several drainage holes at the bottom. A wider container can be used if you want to plant more bulbs together. Fill it with a loose, well-draining potting mix. Plant the bulbs around 10 cm deep, with about 7–8 cm between them. For a fuller display, several bulbs can be planted together, but they should not touch one another. Raise the container slightly on pot feet or bricks so excess water can drain freely.
Growing Requirements
Pests
Generally hardy, but bulbs may be prone to fungal rot if overwatered. Aphids or bulb mites may occasionally appear.
soil
Well-drained, nutrient-rich soil with added compost works best for healthy growth and flowering.
spot
A sunny location is ideal, though they can also grow in partial shade with bright light.
temperature
Thrives in cool to mild climates with temperatures between 10°C–18°C during the growing season.
watering
Water regularly during active growth, keeping soil moist but not soggy. Reduce watering once foliage begins to die back.
how to harvest
Hyacinth Aqua makes a beautiful and strongly scented cut flower. For the longest vase life, harvest the flower stems when the lower flowers have started to open but the upper buds are still closed. Use a clean, sharp knife or pair of scissors to cut the stem close to its base. Place the freshly cut stems in a clean vase filled with fresh water. Remove any leaves that would sit below the water level and change the water regularly. Keep the flowers away from direct sunlight, strong heat and ripening fruit. Most importantly, leave the foliage on the plant after cutting the flowers. The leaves continue to photosynthesise and help replenish the bulb for the next growing cycle.
