Muscari White Magic is a charming spring-flowering bulb that brings a clean, fresh look to the garden. The plant forms a neat clump of narrow, light green, slightly upright leaves, from which short, sturdy flower stems emerge. Each stem carries a dense, cone-shaped cluster of tiny bell- or urn-shaped flowers. The buds begin with a soft pale-green shade and gradually open into crisp white flowers, creating a beautiful contrast against the green foliage. The flowers are also pleasantly fragrant, with a sweet, slightly musky scent. Growing to around 15–20 cm in height, White Magic is naturally compact and works particularly well along garden borders, pathways, rock gardens, beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, or planted in groups for a fuller display. It is also well suited to pots and containers, making it a lovely choice for balconies, patios and small gardens. The flowers appear in spring and can return year after year when the bulbs are planted in well-drained soil and allowed to rest after flowering.
Planting instructions
Use a container that is at least 20–25 cm wide and 20 cm deep for a small group of bulbs. A wider container can be used if you want to plant more bulbs together. Make sure the pot has several drainage holes at the bottom. Fill it with a loose, well-draining potting mix, such as good-quality potting soil mixed with compost and coarse sand or perlite. Plant the bulbs around 8–10 cm deep, with their pointed ends facing upwards. In containers, bulbs can be planted slightly closer together than in the ground, but they should not touch one another.
Growing Requirements
Pests
Muscari are generally hardy but can be bothered by pests like aphids and diseases like gray mold. Keep an eye out for these and treat with insecticidal soap or a fungicide if needed.
soil
Muscari bulbs prefer well-draining soil with good organic matter. They thrive in soil that's slightly sandy or loamy. Make sure the soil isn't waterlogged to prevent bulb rot.
spot
Choose a spot with full to partial sunlight. Muscari can tolerate a bit of shade but will bloom best in sunnier areas. Plant them under trees, in flower beds, or along garden borders.
temperature
Muscari varieties like cool weather. Plant them in the fall or early winter when the soil temperature is around 50-60°F (10-15°C). They can tolerate some frost.
watering
Water your Muscari bulbs right after planting to help them settle in. After that, they don't need much water. Water sparingly, only when the soil feels dry to the touch. Overwatering can cause bulbs to rot.
how to harvest
Muscari White Magic can be used as a delicate cut flower, particularly for small bouquets, bud vases and spring arrangements. Harvest the flower stems when the lower flowers have opened but the upper part of the flower spike is still in bud. This gives the stems a longer display life as more flowers open in the vase. Use a clean, sharp pair of scissors or garden snips to cut the stems close to their base. Place the stems in clean, cool water as soon as possible. Change the water regularly and keep the arrangement away from direct sunlight, heaters and very warm areas.
